Artist Statement: Transart, Semester II
Where does the city end and nature begin? Humans are an intrinsic part of nature. The city does not create a delineation or threshold between people and their natural environment, it is a subset of a larger holistic world. We breathe the same air, the food we eat comes from the earth and basic elements (if you trace it back), our cities and monuments are in a constant state of entropy. This work, like its subject matter is in constant flux and encompasses several disciplines. Photography, mark making, and now in this semester, sculpture are all central to the work. I am actively searching for ways to blend those boundaries together to find new channels of communication, while staying true to the subject matter.
The works include 4 found object sculptures which are all centered around the same 30' radius area. All four use similar materials- plant matter and heavy gage metal wire all in various stages of decay. Each of the sculptures was created with a variation in theme: Found object is based on first impressions of the location. Ideas of orderly chaos, and a system guided by internal tension are central. Bouquet is a more playful piece, exploring concepts of beauty as well as the reciprocal relationship of people with their environment - we are completely supported by the world around us even as we attempt to control it. Immortal Coil explores the cyclic nature of order and entropy, the constant flow and change of the physical world. The Wreath is a more integrated and orderly approach to the initial chaotic perceptions Found Object.
Through all my work, I find a compelling urge to use photography, and would consider research photos taken on site to be a part of the overall project. I feel that the documentation of the sculpture pieces to be an important component to the project. I have not yet resolved exhibition questions which include, "should I show the sculptures in a gallery as art pieces, or will the photography of the pieces be the art?" and "does it make sense to try and integrate the project into an Internet based dissemination instead of a gallery based one?"
This semester has allowed me to approach my subject matter from a fresh angle, by working in a very basic, physical way I have been able to look with a different set of eyes. I know that my awareness of the spaces I visit is heightened now, and I am very interested in returning to the photo based work I was doing before my time at Transart, to see if this clarity infuses the work with the vitality I felt it was lacking.
